The British actor is set to play a puppeteer role in a six-episode film set in 1980s New York. Cumberbatch will star as Vincent Sullivan, the lead puppet maker of America’s most famous children’s show. After his young son Edgar suddenly disappears, Vincent becomes homeless and addicted to drugs. 

On this journey to find his son, his only companion is a seven-foot-tall blue puppet named Eric. The puppet is able to help him find his son and return home together.

The series is based on the book of the same name by Ben Macintyre, which tells the story of Russian oligarchs who fled to London in the early 2000s after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Cumberbatch will play Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB agent who became one of the most powerful oligarchs in Russia. Lebedev is the owner of the Evening Standard newspaper and The Independent, and he has been accused of being a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The series will also star Jessie Buckley, Miranda Richardson, and Jim Broadbent. It is being written by Peter Straughan and directed by Susanna White.

Londongrad is the latest in a string of high-profile projects for Cumberbatch. He recently starred in the critically acclaimed film The Power of the Dog, and he is currently filming the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
