1. The Great (2020)

The Great is an underrated Tv show for viewers who enjoy a rewrite of history. It’s a black comedy that amusingly retells Catherine the Great’s (Empress of All Russia) rise to power in the state and her love-hate relationship with her husband, Emperor Peter III of Russia.

The series is set in the 18th century and follows Catherine as she arrives in Russia to marry Emperor Peter III. Catherine is initially naive and idealistic, but she soon learns that the Russian court is a dangerous place full of intrigue and betrayal. Despite the challenges she faces, Catherine is determined to succeed and become the ruler of Russia herself.

Elle Fanning and Nicolas Hoult did a great job in their lead roles, and the writing is very funny. Few other historically inaccurate shows delight the way The Great does. This show is still ongoing, and viewers can stream it now on Hulu.

2. Awkward (2011)

MTV teen drama Awkward was groundbreaking when it was released because it tackled mental health and the struggles of teenhood with more gravitas than before. When Jenna’s accident gets misconstrued as a suicide attempt, she takes to the internet to clear the air.

Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) is a 15-year-old girl who is trying to navigate the ups and downs of high school. She is constantly making mistakes, but always manages to learn from them. She is surrounded by a group of friends who are also trying to figure out life, including her best friend Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed), her crush Jake (Brett Davern), and her frenemy Ming (Megan Park).

3. Crashing (2016)

Crashing is a 2016 funny comedy that fans of Phoebe Waller-Bridge would enjoy. Waller-Bridge imagines a motley crew of 20-somethings who choose to live in an abandoned hospital as property guardians for cheap rent.

The friends are all aspiring comedians, and they often find themselves in hilarious and awkward situations as they try to make it in the entertainment industry.

Nathan Brown is a computer programmer who is in a near-fatal accident. He is uploaded to a virtual afterlife called Lakeview, where he can live forever in a perfect digital world. He meets Nora Antony, his customer service representative who helps him navigate his new existence.

Nathan begins to fall in love with Nora, but she is hesitant to reciprocate his feelings because she is still alive. So he must decide whether he wants to stay in Lakeview or return to the real world.

7. The Newsroom (2012)

The Newsroom is a show that follows the newsroom of a fictional channel, Atlantis Cable News, but recreates real-life events that changed world history, like 9/11. 

Its an American political drama television series created by Aaron Sorkin that premiered on HBO on June 24, 2012, and ended on December 14, 2014. The series follows the staff of the fictional cable news program ACN’s News Night, as they try to produce a credible and informative newscast in the face of declining ratings and competition from other news outlets.

The series stars Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy, the anchor of News Night, and Emily Mortimer as MacKenzie McHale, the executive producer of the program. The cast also includes John Slattery, Alison Pill, Olivia Munn, and Sam Waterston.

Not a lot of shows could capture the behind-the-scenes frenzy of a real newsroom as this television gem did. 

The show shows what would have happened off-camera in a newsroom when these global incidents shook the world. The tussle between journalistic ethics and personal drama is well-tackled in the film. 

8. I Am Not Okay With This (2020)

This is a superhero show that everyone forgot exists, but ita one of the most underrated Tv shows ever. It’s a story about Sydney, a superpowered teen who was bizarre in the best way.

The series follows Sydney Novak, a teenage girl who is struggling to deal with the death of her father, her first crush, and her emerging telekinesis.

The series stars Sophia Lillis as Sydney Novak, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Barber, Sofia Bryant as Dina, and Kathleen Rose Perkins as Maggie Novak.

Based on the eponymous graphic novel, I Am Not Okay With This was a riot of primary colors and terrific art direction, which only added to the show’s uniqueness. It subverted a ton of silly superhero tropes and definitely deserved another season to finish it off well

9. Flatbush Misdemeanors (2021)

This web series show is about the life and times of two friends trying to survive in Flatbush, Brooklyn, while tackling mental illness, unemployment, and family problems.

The film stars Lakeith Stanfield, Adam Sandler, Idina Menzel, and Judd Hirsch. It follows two cousins in Brooklyn who are trying to make it in the world, but they keep getting into trouble.

The film opens with Brendan (Lakeith Stanfield) trying to make it as a comedian. He has a day job as a telemarketer, but he dreams of one day performing at the Comedy Cellar. His cousin Lionel (Adam Sandler) is a small-time hustler who is always looking for the next big score. He gets Brendan involved in a scheme to sell a stolen car, but the plan goes awry and they end up getting in trouble with a loan shark.

Meanwhile, Brendan is also trying to help his friend Nadia (Idina Menzel), who is being threatened by her abusive husband. He tries to intervene, but things only get worse. In the end, Brendan and Lionel must learn to work together if they want to survive in the mean streets of Brooklyn.

While the comedy show is sad, the melancholia of Kevin and Dan is written in a funny way. The show is fresh and richly created, staying away from the New York City stereotypes. 

10. The Wilds (2020)

Last on the list of most underrated Tv shows is The Wilds. This 2020 American teen drama television series was created by Sarah Streicher for Amazon Prime Video. The series follows a group of teenage girls who are stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes. The girls must learn to work together if they want to survive.

The series stars Sophia Ali, Shannon Berry, Jenna Clause, Reign Edwards, Mia Healey, Helena Howard, Barbie Ferreira, and Sarah Pidgeon.
