1. Contagion (2011)

One of the best natural disaster movies is Contagion. This 2011 film is about a respiratory virus that turned into a global pandemic. 

Directed by Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, the virus outbreak in this movie is very similar to that of COVID-19.

A deadly virus, originating from a bat in China, spreads rapidly around the world through respiratory droplets and fomites. The virus has an incubation period of up to 14 days, during which time infected individuals are contagious but show no symptoms. The virus is highly fatal, with a mortality rate of up to 30%.

There is no known cure, but a team of scientists is working on a vaccine. In the meantime, governments around the world implement quarantine measures in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus. However, the virus is too contagious and the quarantine measures are largely ineffective.

The virus quickly overwhelms the world’s healthcare systems. Hospitals are overcrowded and running out of supplies. People are dying in the streets. Panic and chaos reign supreme.

In the midst of this chaos, a team of doctors and scientists race against time to find a cure. They work day and night, but it is a race they may not be able to win.

2. San Andreas (2015)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is an LA Fire Department helicopter rescue pilot who rescues his wife from a skyscraper when a number of major earthquakes strike LA and San Francisco. After that, they embark on an intense search for their daughter amid the disaster.

A massive 9.1 magnitude earthquake strikes California, causing widespread destruction. Ray Gaines, a helicopter rescue pilot, is forced to put aside his differences with his estranged wife, Emma, to rescue her and their daughter, Blake, from the rubble of Los Angeles.

As they make their way north to San Francisco, they must contend with the aftermath of the quake, including tsunamis, fires, and collapsing buildings. Along the way, they also encounter other survivors who are struggling to stay alive.

3. The Perfect Storm (2000)

The Perfect Storm is a movie based on a true story of a fishing boat, Andrea Gail, that was caught in a terrific hurricane on the open sea in 1991. 

George Clooney acts as the boat captain while Mark Wahlberg is a fishing newbie who finds themselves in a desperate attempt to survive, while their families back home in Massachusetts remain increasingly worried about them. 

The storm is so powerful that it capsizes the Andrea Gail and kills all of its crew members. The film is a harrowing depiction of the power of nature and the dangers of fishing in the North Atlantic.

4. Twister (1996)

Twister is a disaster movie about a couple who plan to finalize their divorce, but before that happens, they find themselves trying to outrun tornadoes ravaging Oklahoma. The film stars Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.

A team of storm chasers as they deploy a device called Dorothy, which is designed to collect data on tornadoes. The team encounters several tornadoes throughout the film, including a massive tornado that nearly kills them. In the end, the team of storm chasers survives, and they are able to use the data they collected to develop a new tornado warning system.

5. The Impossible (2012)

The Impossible is one of the best natural disaster dramas on Netflix based on the events of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that caused the deaths of more than 220,000 people in 2004. 

The drama is about a Survivor on vacation with her family in Thailand when the tsunami hit on December 26, 2004. A spanish family on vacation in Thailand, are caught in the tsunami. Maria (Watts), Henry (McGregor), and their three sons, Lucas, Thomas, and Simon, are separated during the chaos. Maria and Lucas are swept away by the water and presumed dead, while Henry and the other two boys are injured but survive.

Maria and Lucas eventually find each other, but they are still in danger. They must find food and shelter, and they must also deal with the emotional trauma of the experience. In the end, the Belóns are reunited and they begin to rebuild their lives.

Released in 2012, the drama recounts the real-life distressing experiences of María Belón and her family.

6. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

The Day After Tomorrow is another natural disaster movie about a series of cataclysmic weather events caused by climate change that causes the Northern Hemisphere to turn into an Ice Age. The film is based on the 1999 book The Coming Global Superstorm.

The movie centers on a father/son duo. The father is a paleoclimatologist who desperately tries to convince the government to heed his warnings, and at the same time, save his son Sam in NYC with time running out.

The film depicts a series of extreme weather events that are caused by a sudden and dramatic shift in the Earth’s climate. The events begin with a massive ice shelf breaking off in Antarctica, which triggers a chain reaction of climate change.

As the Earth’s temperature plummets, New York City is hit by a massive snowstorm. The city is quickly buried in snow and ice, and people are forced to evacuate. Meanwhile, a group of scientists led by Jack Hall (Quaid) travel to the Arctic to try to stop the storm.

In the end, the storm is stopped, but the damage has already been done. Much of the Earth’s population has been killed, and the world is plunged into a new ice age.

7. 2012 (2009)

2012 is a sci-fi apocalyptic disaster film about a series of arks built by various presidents to save their citizens from a modern-day biblical world-ending flood. It is based on the hypothesis that the world was come to an end on December 21, 2012, per the ancient Mayan calendar. 

In the movie, John Cusack acts as a struggling science-fiction author and father-of-two who must save his family and get them into an ark amiss the ravaging earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and megatsunamis. 

A geologist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) discovers that the Earth’s core is heating up rapidly, which will trigger a series of cataclysmic events around the world in the coming months.

American geologist Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) learns about the impending disaster from Helmsley and tries to save his family by taking them to a secret government bunker in the Himalayas.

Along the way, they encounter other survivors and must battle the elements as the Earth’s crust begins to rupture and the continents shift.

In the end, a small group of survivors find refuge in the Himalayas, while the rest of the world is destroyed by a series of natural disasters.
