Anne with an E was a big hit movie when it was released, but the series was later canceled by Netflix.

Despite being a certified hit, Netflix canceled the Canadian series, Anne with an E after three seasons.

Anne with an E is the coming-of-age series about an adolescent Anne Shirley, who is adopted into a small family on Prince Edward Island on the Eastern Coast of Canada. The film story is almost based on the Anne of Green Gables books written by Lisa Maud Montgomery.

The show is a hit series for viewers as the interesting plot combined with the aesthetic to maintain a jovial feel to it while tackling several issues, including gender inequality, child abandonment and racism.

It also won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Drama Series, meeting every expectation based on the books. Yet, after three seasons,  Netflix canceled the series much to the utter surprise of viewers.

The Series is Based on the Children book, Anne of Green Gables

Anne with an E is depicted from the Anne of Green Gables children’s books. The film is set in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. The series is about Anne (Amybeth McNulty), a 13-year-old orphan girl who just wishes to belong. After three seasons, she finds herself sent to Prince Edward Island to stay with siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. There, Anne finds out her identity and how she fits into the world.

Infact, Anne with an E was so popular during its run, that when it was revealed that third season would be the last, petitions were made even from celebrities like Ryan Reynolds to save the show.

Despite everything, the series ended.

Why Was The Series Canceled?

One of the major speculations on why Anne With An E was that the show didn’t meet the expected ratings required to fund the production of the show.

Anne With An E is among the many films that have been shut down due to Netflix’s strict conditions. It’s even more saddening that most of the  shows that are so swiftly canceled  are of absolutely addictive e.g Glow (2017-2019), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020), The OA (2016-2019), and Mindhunter (2017-2019).

However, Anne with an E’s Canadian network, CBC, also cut all ties with Netflix altogether. That could be another reason the series was canceled because Netflix shows are legally restricted from seeking a new network as soon as a streaming platform cancels them.

Though the producers have concluded that Anne with an E will not continue, many fans have been optimistic. Despite the thousands of petitions to the studios to renew Anne with an E with since it was canceled in 2019, there has been no positive sign at all that anything more will come out of the series.

Also Amybeth McNulty has grown up by now, and no longer fits the role of the adolescent Anne, therefore it can safely be said that the series has come to a close.

Other performances from Anne with an E title star Amybeth McNulty include her film All My Puny Sorrows is worth a watch; Vickie in the fourth season of Stranger Things
