Marvel Launches ASL
In a move that has been praised by the deaf community, Disney+ has added an American Sign Language (ASL) viewing option to Marvel Studios‘ Ant-Man. The new option, which was launched on April 14, 2023, in time for National American Sign Language (ASL) Day, allows deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers to enjoy the film without missing a beat.
The ASL option is available on all Disney+ devices, and can be accessed by selecting the “Extras” tab on the Ant-Man page. The ASL interpreter is positioned in the bottom right corner of the screen, and signs all of the dialogue in real time.
Deluxe, Grupo Steno, and RespectAbility’s Delbert Whetter who was the daily ASL consultant worked together to create Disney+’s ASL Video Service.
The addition of an ASL option to Ant-Man is a significant step forward for Disney+, and is a positive sign that the streaming service is committed to making its content accessible to all viewers. It is also a welcome development for the deaf community, which has long lobbied for more accessible content from streaming services.
Since the launch of the ASL option, there is positive reactions from the deaf community. In a statement, RespectAbility, a national disability rights organization, praised Disney+ for “making its content more accessible to the deaf community.”
“This is a great step forward for Disney+, and we applaud the company for making its content more accessible to the deaf community,” said RespectAbility President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi. “This new option will allow deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers to enjoy Ant-Man without missing a beat, and we hope that other streaming services will follow Disney+’s lead.
There’s no information yet as to when or how the cast of Ant-Man will appear next in the MCU. However, producer Stephen Broussard has confirmed in an interview that conversations about a fourth Ant-Man were already in progress.
The Benefits of ASL Options
There are many benefits to having ASL options available on streaming services. For deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, ASL options can make it possible to enjoy movies and TV shows without having to rely on subtitles. This can be especially helpful for viewers who are fluent in ASL but who have difficulty reading subtitles.
ASL options can also be beneficial for hearing viewers. For example, if a hearing viewer is watching a movie with a deaf friend or family member, the ASL option can help to ensure that everyone can enjoy the movie together.
In addition to the benefits for viewers, streaming services can also benefit. By making their content more accessible, streaming services can attract a wider audience and increase their viewership.
The Future of ASL Options
The launch of the ASL option for Ant-Man is a positive step forward, but it is just the beginning. There is still a long way to go before all streaming services offer ASL options. However, the trend is moving in the right direction, and it is likely that more and more streaming services will offer ASL options in the future.
The addition of ASL options to streaming services is a positive development for both deaf and hearing viewers. It is a sign that streaming services are committed to making their content accessible to all, and it is a welcome step forward for the deaf community.
